Turkish cherry is the most exported cherry in the world, following cherry exporter countries are the United States, and Chili. Turkey produces big amounts of cherry because of good soils, and very good climate for cherry trees. Cherry in Turkish means “Kiraz”.

Cherry Production By Country

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the top cherry producing countries in the world are:

  1. Turkey
  2. United States
  3. Iran
  4. Italy
  5. Spain
  6. Uzbekistan
  7. China
  8. Chile
  9. Greece
  10. Argentina

These countries account for the majority of the world’s cherry production.

Also, the fact that sweet cherries are native to this area of Asia. It means that Turkey has all the necessary conditions to grow sweet Turkish cherries in all parts of the country. 

In 2018, 200 M dollars of cherry export was made by exporter companies in Turkey. The cost of cherry also depends on labor costs and Turkey has an advantage of this compared to the competitor countries. In 2019 cherry production of Turkey was 640 thousand tones and Turkish cherries export was 78 thousand tons.

Cherry season in Turkey typically starts in late May and lasts through early August. The exact timing of the cherry season can vary depending on the region and weather conditions, but generally, the peak harvest period for cherries in Turkey is in June. Turkey is one of the world’s largest cherry producers and exports its cherries to many countries, including Europe and the Middle East. The most common types of cherries grown in Turkey are Napoleon, Ziraat 900 and Regina.

Our city Denizli is one of the leading cities in Turkey about cherry production. The number of cherry growers is increasing year after year.  Especially the new techniques are increasing the efficiency and quality of Turkish cherry. Cherry production reached 650 K tons in the year 2018.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, the total cherry production in Turkey in 2020 was 1,003,375 tons, which was a decrease from the previous year’s production of 1,300,000 tons. The production in 2019 was 1,450,000 tons. These figures include both sweet and sour cherries.

Turkey exports cherries to many countries, including Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, the Netherlands, and Poland. In 2020, the total cherry exports from Turkey were 227,600 tons, generating a revenue of $343.4 million. The top export destinations were Russia, Iraq, and Ukraine.

Turkish cherry export is expected to reach 150 thousand tons in 2023 season.
